Former President Donald Trump has endorsed Trent Staggs, a Republican mayor in Utah, who is seeking to replace retiring Republican Senator Mitt Romney in the state’s GOP primary race for the Senate. Trump praised Staggs as being “100% MAGA” and qualified to fill Romney’s seat, describing Romney as a “Total Loser.” Staggs, who has served as mayor of Riverton for six years, is known for his success as an entrepreneur and his ability to create jobs, stop inflation, grow the economy, and secure the border. Trump expressed confidence in Staggs, stating that he will be a great senator and not let voters down.

Staggs announced his decision to enter the race prior to Romney’s announcement that he would retire at the end of his term next year. Staggs, who gained notoriety in 2020 for opposing mask mandates during the pandemic, cited concerns for his children’s future as a motivation for running for the Senate. He emphasized the need to push back against government spending that impacts future generations and expressed a desire to make change in Washington, rather than fitting in with the status quo. Romney, who won the GOP nomination for president in 2012, announced he would not seek reelection, calling for a new generation of leaders to shape the future.

Staggs was among the first candidates to challenge Romney and has received endorsements from prominent Republicans such as Sen. Tommy Tuberville, Rep. Matt Gaetz, and former presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy. He has also garnered support from Utah’s largest police union, the Utah Fraternal Order of Police, who described him as a longtime supporter of law enforcement and endorsed his candidacy. Staggs’ campaign is focused on issues such as supporting American energy, the military, veterans, and protecting the Second Amendment.

The Republican primary race in Utah features nearly a dozen candidates, including former House Speaker Brad Wilson and current Rep. John Curtis. The outcome of the race will reveal the political conservatism that appeals to modern voters in the state. The winner of the state GOP convention, known to favor far-right candidates, may gain an advantage in the race. While some losing candidates may still qualify for the primary ballot by collecting signatures, ultimately Republican voters will decide who will succeed Romney in the Senate.

Staggs’ platform includes prioritizing American energy, supporting the military and veterans, and defending the Second Amendment. He has been endorsed by Trump, who expressed confidence that Staggs will be a great senator and deliver on his promises to voters. Staggs has positioned himself as a candidate who will bring change to Washington and push back against government overreach. His campaign has gained traction with prominent Republicans and the support of Utah’s largest police union, highlighting his commitment to law enforcement and public safety. The primary race will determine which candidate will receive the party’s nomination to run for the Senate seat in Utah.
