The latest round of Gaza cease-fire talks in Cairo were described by Hamas as “in-depth and serious discussions,” but Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel vowed to resist international pressure to halt the war. Israel closed its main crossing point for delivering humanitarian aid to Gaza after an attack by Hamas. The defense minister warned of a powerful military operation in the near future. Israel did not send a delegation to the talks and instead ordered the closure of the local offices of Qatar’s Al Jazeera news network accusing it of anti-Israel incitement.

Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh expressed optimism about the negotiations, stating that stopping Israeli aggression in Gaza was the main priority. However, Israel continued to lower expectations for a cease-fire deal, deeming Hamas’ demands as extreme. Despite both sides claiming to be serious about negotiations, Israel vowed to press on with a military operation in Rafah, a key entry point for aid. The head of the U.N. agency for Palestinian refugees called for an independent investigation and accountability for humanitarian violations.

The closing of the Kerem Shalom crossing came amid assertions of a full-blown famine in northern Gaza by the head of the U.N. World Food Program. The situation highlighted the urgent need for humanitarian aid to be allowed into the territory. Gaza’s vast humanitarian needs added pressure to the pursuit of a cease-fire deal. The proposal from Egyptian mediators outlined a three-stage process for a cease-fire and partial release of hostages taken in the October 7 attack. Netanyahu reiterated Israel’s willingness to make concessions but stated that they would continue fighting until all objectives, including the crushing of Hamas, are achieved.

Israel’s military offensive has resulted in a significant loss of life, with over 34,500 people killed, according to Palestinian health officials. The situation has raised concerns about the high number of civilian casualties, including women and children. The conflict escalated following the Hamas cross-border attack that killed hundreds and took hostages. Netanyahu is facing pressure from hostages’ families to find a resolution and secure the release of those still held. Despite international calls for a cease-fire, Israel remains determined to defend itself, emphasizing its resolve to stand alone if necessary.
