Several Columbia University students spoke out to Fox News Digital after administrators announced the cancellation of the school’s main commencement ceremony due to security concerns following anti-Israel protests. One graduating senior, Yola Ashkenazie, expressed disappointment over the decision as commencement ceremonies are important for both students and families. She also highlighted her efforts to address antisemitism on campus and the challenges she has faced as a result. Another student, Elisha Baker, lamented the cancellation, stating that it seemed like the university had given in to demands from protesters to “cancel joy” and allow the mob to win.

Baker described witnessing protesters unfurling a pro-intifada banner from a major academic building, which he found shocking and emblematic of the violence and hate speech directed towards Jewish students on campus. He criticized the university for yielding to a vocal minority and failing to protect its students. Despite concerns for safety, Baker emphasized the importance of standing up to the bullies and not allowing Jewish students to be bullied off campus. He called on the university to ensure the safety and well-being of all students, regardless of their backgrounds.

Junior Eden Yadegar also criticized the university for allowing a small but vocal minority to control the narrative on campus and create a hostile environment for students. She expressed disappointment in the lack of consequences for disruptive behavior and called out the administration for not enforcing promised repercussions. Another student, Batya Tropper, expressed concerns about the safety of Jewish students on campus and the impact on their decision to attend Ivy League universities. She cited the need for a safe and inclusive environment for all students to pursue their education without fear of discrimination or persecution.

The students’ accounts shed light on the challenges faced by Jewish students at Columbia University and the impact of anti-Israel protests on campus life. The cancellation of commencement ceremonies highlighted tensions between various student groups and the administration’s handling of security concerns. The ongoing protests have raised questions about free speech, campus safety, and the responsibility of universities to protect all students from discrimination and harassment. As the debate continues, it remains essential for institutions like Columbia to address these issues proactively and ensure a welcoming and inclusive environment for all students.
