Students at Sciences Po in Paris initiated a pro-Palestinian protest by occupying a central campus building and blocking the entrance with trash cans and wooden platforms. They chanted slogans and hung Palestinian flags and placards in the windows. Riot police were called to separate pro-Palestinian and pro-Israeli demonstrators who faced off in the street outside the school. As night fell, a smaller group of protesters ignored police orders to evacuate and refused to budge. Eventually, they left the building with a large Palestinian flag to cheers from supporters and began to peacefully disperse.

Among the demands of the protesters was that Sciences Po sever ties with Israeli schools. In response, the university administration pledged to hold a town hall meeting and suspend disciplinary proceedings against students. In return, the students agreed to no longer disrupt courses, examinations, and other activities of the institution. The Gaza war has caused division in France, where there are significant Muslim and Jewish populations. France initially tried to ban pro-Palestinian demonstrations after an attack by Hamas on Israel, leading to a surge in antisemitism.

Earlier in the week, over 100 pro-Palestinian protesters occupied a Sciences Po amphitheater, with most agreeing to leave after discussions with management. However, a small group remained and had to be removed by police later that night. This led to the closure of all university buildings and the movement of classes online. The university administration strongly condemned the students’ actions, stating that they prevented the proper functioning of the institution and penalized students, teachers, and employees.

The student actions at Sciences Po were inspired by similar demonstrations at Columbia University and other U.S. campuses. Protests against the Israel-Hamas war have been taking place across the U.S., with hundreds of students and even professors being arrested in some cases amid struggles with police. The situation at Sciences Po reflects a global sentiment of solidarity with the Palestinian people, with students across different countries taking action to show their support for the cause.

The escalation of tensions at Sciences Po highlights the deep-rooted divisions that exist surrounding the Israel-Palestine conflict. Student-led movements in support of Palestine have become a significant force in advocating for change and drawing attention to the ongoing conflict. The response from university administrations, law enforcement, and local authorities has varied, with some taking a hardline approach while others have engaged in dialogue and negotiation to address the concerns of students.

The success of these protests in influencing university policies and actions demonstrates the power of student activism in bringing attention to issues of social justice and human rights. By mobilizing on campuses and disrupting normal operations, students are able to confront institutions and challenge the status quo. The solidarity shown by students at Sciences Po and other universities around the world highlights the growing awareness and involvement of young people in global conflicts and social movements. As the situation in Gaza continues to unfold, it is likely that student activism will remain a key driver of change and a voice for those affected by the conflict.
