Democrat Representative Elissa Slotkin, who is currently running for Senate in Michigan, is facing scrutiny over a Limited Liability Company (LLC) she started in 2017 just weeks before announcing her congressional bid. The LLC, called Pinpoint Consulting, is listed as “Not in Good Standing” with the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs as of 2020. Slotkin’s campaign website previously mentioned her role as a small business owner in Holly, Michigan, where the LLC is based. However, disclosures indicate that the business has been inactive since 2017 and generates no income or revenue. Slotkin’s campaign did not confirm whether the company had any clients, revenue, or employees.

Slotkin established the LLC in June 2017, shortly before announcing her campaign for Congress to unseat a Republican incumbent. While her campaign stated that she set up the consulting firm after leaving the Department of Defense to explore various job opportunities, critics argue that the timing of the LLC’s creation and subsequent inactivity raises questions about its purpose. Some believe that Slotkin utilized the LLC as a talking point to portray herself as a small business owner during her congressional campaign, particularly to appeal to Republican voters in her predominantly Republican-leaning district.

Despite being listed as the founder and CEO of Pinpoint Consulting in a financial disclosure report filed in 2023, Slotkin’s firm is not mentioned in her Senate campaign or official biography. Critics, including a National Republican Senatorial Committee spokesperson, have raised concerns about Slotkin’s misrepresentation of her business experience and the lack of evidence of actual clients or revenue for the consulting company. The controversy surrounding the LLC could potentially impact Slotkin’s Senate campaign, particularly as she seeks the Democratic nomination in Michigan to replace outgoing Senator Debbie Stabenow.

The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee did not provide a comment on the matter. Slotkin is considered the frontrunner for the Democratic Senate nomination in Michigan, with actor Hill Harper and Lebanese-born businessman Nasser Beydoun also running for the nomination. The Senate primary in Michigan is scheduled for August 6th, with the general election race rated as “Lean Democratic” by The Cook Political Report. On the Republican side, former Rep. Mike Rogers, former Reps. Peter Meijer and Justin Amash, and businessman Sandy Pensler are among the candidates vying for the nomination, with Rogers enjoying the endorsement of former President Trump. The outcome of the Michigan Senate race remains uncertain as the campaign progresses.
