A couple from Eastbourne, East Sussex, Keith Byrne and Sophie Singer, left their elderly dog, Bentley, alone in their home while they went on holiday. They were given suspended jail sentences for causing unnecessary suffering to the protected animal. RSPCA inspectors were called by neighbors and found Bentley emaciated at the foot of the stairs, with overgrown nails, an ear infection, and a skin condition. A vet determined that the dog had been neglected for over four weeks and had been reduced to eating rubbish, including food wrappers and a felt tip pen. Despite efforts to save him, Bentley did not survive.

At Lewes Crown Court, Keith Byrne received a nine-month suspended sentence, while Sophie Singer received a six-month suspended sentence, both for two years. They were also banned from owning animals for five years and ordered to carry out unpaid work hours. The couple was found guilty of causing unnecessary suffering to Bentley and were also ordered to pay £350 in costs. The vet who treated Bentley reported that the dog’s nails were so overgrown that he would have had difficulty walking, further illustrating the neglect Bentley experienced during his owners’ absence.

RSPCA inspector Tony Woodley addressed the neglect Bentley faced while his owners were on vacation, emphasizing that the dog was in pain despite their disregard for his well-being. He thanked nearby residents for alerting the RSPCA of Bentley’s situation, allowing them to take action alongside Sussex Police. Despite their efforts, Bentley could not be saved, underscoring the severe consequences of neglecting an elderly animal. The case serves as a warning that age is not an excuse for failing to provide basic care and veterinary treatment to pets.

The RSPCA continues to raise awareness about animal neglect and encourage responsible pet ownership. They highlight the importance of neighbors and community members speaking up when they suspect an animal is being mistreated, as in Bentley’s case. By working together with law enforcement and veterinary professionals, the RSPCA aims to protect vulnerable animals from suffering. The couple’s suspended jail sentences and other legal consequences serve as a reminder of the serious repercussions of neglecting an animal in need of care.

This tragic case serves as a reminder of the responsibility that comes with owning a pet and the consequences of neglecting their well-being. Bentley’s suffering could have been prevented if his owners had taken appropriate measures to ensure his health and safety while they were away. The suspended jail sentences and other penalties imposed on the couple reflect the severity of their actions and the importance of upholding animal welfare laws. Through education and enforcement efforts, the RSPCA continues to advocate for the protection of animals and the accountability of their owners. Bentley’s story highlights the significance of speaking out against animal cruelty and neglect to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
