Ukraine has recently entered the drone warfare scene with the development of the Ram II, an upgraded version of an older Ukrainian drone called the Leleka-100. These drones, designed by Deviro, are capable of striking within three feet of their target and have already started wreaking havoc on Russian air defenses. The Ram II, which range as far as 19 miles with a seven-pound warhead, functions similar to the Russian Lancet drones, loitering, scanning, and striking with minimal input from a human operator.

The importance of Ukraine’s new drone campaign targeting Russian air defenses cannot be overstated. While smaller drones are attacking Russian tanks and infantry at the front line and long-range drones are striking into the Russian heartland, the Ram II is focusing on the middle ground where enemy air defenses are located. By targeting Russian air defenses, the Ukrainian drones could clear the way for fighter-bombers to approach the front line and drop precision glide bombs from a distance of 25 miles, similar to what the Russian Lancets have done for their air force.

The use of KAB glide bombs by the Russians is proving to be a decisive weapon in the ongoing conflict. These bombs, ranging from 1,100 to 3,300 pounds, are capable of devastating Ukrainian positions and clearing a path for Russian ground forces. The Ukrainian air force faces a challenge in countering these deadly bombs, but they have received Joint Direct Attack Munition-Extended Range glide bombs from the United States, along with French-made Hammer glide bombs for their MiG and Sukhoi fighters.

While Russian Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives have blocked further aid to Ukraine, including more JDAM-ER glide bombs, there is hope that this aid may resume in the future. The Ukrainian air force is reliant on these munitions to counter the Russian KAB glide bombs, and more support could potentially be on the way. As the Ukrainian air force continues to modify their aircraft and develop tactics, they aim to push back Russian air defenses and create a safer environment for their jets to conduct precision strikes on Russian forces.

The development and deployment of the Ram II drones by Ukraine marks a significant shift in the battle for air superiority in the conflict. With the ability to strike enemy air defenses and create a safe zone for their own aircraft, Ukraine is taking a proactive approach to counter Russian aggression. As both sides continue to adapt and innovate their tactics and technology, the outcome of the conflict remains uncertain, but Ukraine’s new drone campaign could play a crucial role in shaping the future of the conflict.

Overall, the introduction of the Ram II drones by Ukraine signifies a new phase in the ongoing conflict with Russia. By targeting enemy air defenses and creating opportunities for their fighter-bombers, Ukraine is showcasing their ability to adapt and respond to Russian threats. As both sides continue to develop and deploy new weapons and tactics, the future of the conflict remains unpredictable, but Ukraine’s new drone campaign is proving to be a formidable force against Russian aggression.
