Real Madrid is preparing for a squad overhaul ahead of the 2024/25 season, starting with the departure of club captain Nacho Fernandez. In order to strengthen their backline, the club has reportedly identified Rafael Marin as a potential new signing. The 22-year-old defender is currently on loan at Deportivo Alaves, where he has been making a name for himself with strong performances in the Spanish top flight.

Despite a somewhat inconsistent start at Alaves, Marin has established himself as a regular starter in recent months. Standing at six feet three inches, he is a dominant presence in the air and possesses the ability to build play from the back with both feet. His loan spell has provided him with valuable experience and he is eager to continue his development, whether it be at Real Madrid or another club. Bayern Leverkusen has also shown interest in signing Marin, highlighting his growing reputation in European football.

Having emerged from the youth ranks of Sevilla before making the switch to Real Madrid, Marin has proven his potential at every level. He has represented Spain at various youth levels and is currently a part of the under 21 setup. While he may not be a regular starter at Real Madrid, Marin could provide valuable depth to the squad, supporting the likes of Antonio Rudiger, David Alaba, and Eder Militao in the central defensive positions. The club is also looking at other defensive targets, with Bayern Munich’s Alphonso Davies and the uncertain future of Lucas Vazquez in mind.

Despite his ambitions of breaking into the first team at Real Madrid, Marin acknowledges the high level of competition at the club and in La Liga. He is focused on continuing to improve as a player and gaining valuable experience through his loan spell. His dedication and work ethic have not gone unnoticed, with former Real Madrid player and current manager Xabi Alonso also reportedly interested in bringing him to Bayer Leverkusen. Real Madrid will need to make some key decisions in the upcoming transfer window as they look to strengthen their squad in preparation for the new season.
