Ukraine shot down a Russian Su-25 fighter jet in the east of the country on Saturday, as Moscow’s aircraft continued lethal attacks with aerial bombs. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky praised the country’s 110th Separate Mechanized Brigade for their actions, noting that this was not the first time a Russian aircraft had been taken down in the region. The U.S.’ European Command previously reported that Russia had lost around 10 percent of its aircraft fleet in the ongoing conflict that has been going on for three years. Kyiv’s air force is expected to receive Western-provided F-16 fighter jets in the coming weeks, which will help replenish losses with more advanced hardware.

Ukrainian air force spokesperson Illya Yevlash stated that the country’s ground forces targeted the Russian Su-25 jet successfully. He praised the work of small- and medium-range air-defense units for effectively dealing with various types of air targets, including aircraft. Zelensky expressed gratitude to all the military personnel involved in protecting Ukrainian skies from Russian aggression. Air defenses have been a crucial focus for Ukraine in fending off attacks from Russia’s more advanced air force. Russia has been firing missiles and guided aerial bombs along the border and front line, using modified Soviet-era munitions converted into precision-guided winged bombs.

In response to the ongoing aerial attacks, Ukraine has consistently lobbied for more Western-made air-defense systems and missile supplies to strengthen their defenses. A recent tranche of military aid from the U.S. addressed Kyiv’s air-defense needs, along with refilling artillery ammunition stocks. The aid, which had faced delays in Congress, reflects the ongoing support for Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression. Moscow has been using precision-guided bombs to devastate Ukrainian positions, highlighting the need for robust air defenses to counter these attacks.

The conflict in Ukraine has entered its third year, with both sides engaging in aerial warfare along the border and front lines. The downing of a Russian fighter jet by Ukrainian forces underscores the intensity of the fighting and the importance of air superiority in the conflict. The arrival of advanced F-16 fighter jets will provide Ukraine with better capabilities to defend against Russian airstrikes and further bolster their air force. The ongoing support from Western allies, including the U.S., demonstrates a commitment to standing with Ukraine against Russian aggression in the region.

Despite facing a larger and more advanced Russian air force, Ukraine has shown resilience and determination in defending its territory and protecting its skies. The successful strike on a Russian Su-25 jet demonstrates the effectiveness of Ukrainian air-defense units in countering Russian attacks. The ongoing conflict highlights the importance of Western support in providing Ukraine with the necessary equipment and resources to defend against Russian aggression. As the situation continues to evolve, it is crucial for Ukraine to maintain its air defenses and strengthen its military capabilities to deter further aggression and protect its sovereignty.
