Mike Johnson, a Republican from Louisiana, is leading a wide-ranging investigation on antisemitism on college campuses, involving multiple House committees including Education & the Workforce, Energy & Commerce, Oversight, Judiciary, Ways & Means, and Science, Space & Technology. This is an extension of an ongoing investigation led by the Education & Workforce Committee. The roles of the committees in the probe are still fluid as they have jurisdiction in the matter of antisemitism. Johnson is expected to announce this investigation in a press conference with other committee chairs in response to the recent anti-Israel demonstrations on college campuses that have left Jewish students feeling unsafe.

Following anti-Israel demonstrations at Columbia University and Barnard College, Columbia’s investment in companies with Israeli ties sparked protests. The investigation is not solely focused on Columbia but will look into any university receiving federal funds in relation to antisemitism. Various committees will play different roles in the investigation – for instance, the Judiciary Committee will examine existing anti-discrimination laws. The Oversight Committee will investigate funding sources of the protests. The Ways & Means Committee will analyze tax benefits universities receive and how they justify these benefits under the current U.S. tax code. Johnson criticized protesters and faculty members, denouncing them as a “mob” and emphasizing the importance of respectful debate on college campuses.

House Republicans, led by committee chairs, are expanding the investigation to hold college and university administrators accountable for failing to keep students safe. With an increasing number of anti-Israel protests on college campuses, this investigation aims to address antisemitism in universities nationwide. Johnson’s visit to Columbia University highlighted the need for respectful debate and the free exchange of ideas. The investigation will involve multiple committees to address various aspects of antisemitism on college campuses, including funding sources, tax benefits, and compliance with anti-discrimination laws. Johnson’s strong stance against protesters and faculty members involved in the recent demonstrations underscores the importance of maintaining a safe and open environment for all students on college campuses.
