Texas Governor Greg Abbott has criticized President Joe Biden’s proposed asylum rules, stating that they will not slow down the record-breaking illegal immigration that the United States is currently facing. Biden’s proposals aim to expedite the asylum process for certain groups, including those with prior criminal convictions, by allowing asylum officers to make a decision at the initial screening. Abbott has stated that these reforms will not make a difference in the level of irregular migration and has issued an ultimatum to Biden to either follow Texas’ lead or step aside.

Abbott also accused the Biden administration of obstructing Operation Lone Star, a program launched in 2021 to combat illegal crossings in Texas. The operation involves Texas National Guard soldiers constructing razor wire along the border and placing floating buoys in the Rio Grande to prevent illegal entry. Abbott emphasized that Texas is doing what Congress has compelled Biden to do and criticized the President for attacking Texas for taking necessary measures to curb illegal immigration. He claimed that Texas’ efforts have resulted in a significant decline in illegal immigration in the state compared to other border states.

Tensions between the Biden administration and Governor Abbott have escalated in recent months, with the Supreme Court ruling in January that federal agents could remove razor wire placed along the Texas-Mexico border at Abbott’s orders. Abbott referred to the situation as an “invasion” and invoked Texas’ constitutional authority to defend and protect itself. In response, 25 other Republican governors released a joint statement in support of Abbott, and former President Trump urged GOP-controlled states to deploy National Guard troops to Texas to support border control efforts.

A survey conducted for Newsweek in April found that only 20 percent of eligible U.S. voters believed that the country had control over its borders, a significant decrease from 34 percent in August 2023. With a record number of migrant encounters recorded by U.S. Customs and Border Protection in recent years, the issue of illegal immigration has become a prominent political concern. Abbott’s criticism of Biden’s asylum reforms reflects the ongoing debate over how to address the challenges posed by irregular migration and enforce immigration laws effectively.

As the Biden administration continues to grapple with the issue of illegal immigration, Governor Abbott remains firm in his stance that Texas’ approach, as exemplified by Operation Lone Star, is effective in curbing illegal crossings and ensuring border security. The governor’s criticism of Biden’s asylum proposals is part of a wider political debate surrounding immigration policy and enforcement mechanisms. As the situation at the border remains complex and multifaceted, finding common ground and effective solutions to address irregular migration will require collaboration and cooperation across different levels of government.
