Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., did not commit to holding hearings on college antisemitism as tensions rise with anti-Israel demonstrations persisting at elite universities. Sanders, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP), stated that he is concerned about bigotry and looks forward to working with his colleagues to eliminate all forms of bigotry in America, including antisemitism. However, when asked specifically about holding hearings on displays of campus antisemitism, Sanders did not provide a clear answer. GOP lawmakers have demanded that the Biden administration prosecute pro-terrorist mobs and hold schools accountable for antisemitism.

GOP Sen. Bill Cassidy, Ranking Member of the HELP Committee, urged Sanders to hold hearings on college antisemitism, stating that the eroding situation required oversight. Cassidy emphasized that there should be a zero-tolerance policy towards antisemitism, especially in response to the scenes of violence and threats of violence against Jewish students at Columbia University and other campuses across the country. The demonstration at Columbia University has sparked anti-Israel protests on 23 of the top 50 universities in the U.S., leading 27 Republican senators to call on the Attorney General and Education Secretary to prosecute offenders and hold school administrators accountable.

Responding to the anti-Israel demonstrations, Democrats and Republicans alike have condemned the antisemitism at Columbia University and other college campuses. Education Secretary Miguel Cardona expressed “urgent” concern over the situation, emphasizing that antisemitic hate on college campuses is unacceptable. The Office for Civil Rights had previously opened an investigation involving Title VI at Columbia University in November 2023. Despite the bipartisan condemnation of antisemitism, the Departments of Justice and Education declined to comment on the matter.

Sen. Cassidy had earlier asked Sen. Sanders to hold hearings on antisemitic incidents after the Hamas terrorist attack that led to the conflict between Hamas and Israel. Sanders’ office did not respond to requests for further comment on the issue. The lack of a clear commitment on holding hearings on college antisemitism in the face of rising tensions has sparked concerns among lawmakers about addressing and combating bigotry in the country. As antisemitic demonstrations and incidents continue to occur at universities, there is a growing call for accountability and action to ensure the safety and well-being of Jewish students on campuses across the U.S.

In the face of escalating tensions and growing concerns over antisemitism on college campuses, the debate over holding hearings and taking decisive action to address bigotry and violence against Jewish students continues. Calls for the Biden administration to prosecute offenders, hold schools accountable, and ensure zero tolerance for antisemitism have intensified in response to the recent demonstrations and threats experienced by Jewish students at Columbia University and other institutions. The bipartisan condemnation of antisemitism highlights the importance of addressing and eradicating all forms of bigotry in America, including antisemitism, to create a safe and inclusive environment for all students.
