A court in Romania’s capital, Bucharest, has decided to proceed with a trial against Andrew Tate, who is accused of human trafficking, rape, and forming a criminal gang to sexually exploit women. Tate, along with his brother and two Romanian women, was arrested in December 2022 near Bucharest. The court ruled that the prosecutors’ case file met the legal criteria, but did not set a trial date. Tate’s spokesperson, Mateea Petrescu, stated that the ruling has been appealed. The legal case has been ongoing for months, with the defendants challenging the evidence presented by prosecutors.

The defense team, represented by lawyers Eugen Vidineac and Ioan Gliga, expressed their disagreement with the court’s ruling, stating that it lacked legal basis and reasoning. They have filed a strong appeal, believing the decision to be unlawful. The lawyers remain confident in the arguments they presented during the preliminary hearing and are hopeful that the appeal court judge panel will support them. Tate, a social media influencer with a large following, has consistently denied the allegations against him, claiming that there is a political conspiracy to silence him. He has been known for expressing misogynistic views and hate speech, leading to bans from various social media platforms.

In a separate case, the Bucharest Tribunal extended geographical restrictions against Tate, preventing him from leaving the country. Tate, a former professional kickboxer, had requested permission to travel within the European Union with prior approval from a judge. Following their initial arrest, the Tate brothers were held in police detention for three months before being placed under house arrest. They were later restricted to Bucharest Municipality and nearby Ilfov County, but are now permitted to travel throughout Romania. The brothers also faced extradition requests from British authorities over allegations of sexual aggression in a case dating back to 2012-2015.

The Bucharest Court of Appeal granted the British request to extradite the Tate brothers to the U.K., but only after the legal proceedings in Romania have concluded. The case against Andrew Tate, involving charges of rape, human trafficking, and forming a criminal gang to exploit women, has been a subject of much scrutiny and legal back-and-forth. As the proceedings continue, Tate and his legal team are working to defend against the accusations, while also navigating extradition requests from the U.K. and ongoing restrictions within Romania. The outcome of the trial remains uncertain, with both sides presenting their arguments and evidence in a complex legal battle. The case has garnered attention due to Tate’s social media presence and previous controversies, adding to the complexity of the legal proceedings.
