Israeli Prime Minister’s Office spokesperson Tal Heinrich faced tough questions from CNN on the deadly airstrike that killed seven workers of the charity World Central Kitchen in the Gaza Strip. The airstrike occurred while the charity workers were leaving a warehouse after unloading humanitarian food brought to Gaza by sea. Among the victims were one Palestinian and six foreign citizens, including dual citizens of the U.S. and Canada, as well as individuals from Australia, Britain, and Poland. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called the incident a tragic event and stated that it was unintentional, promising a thorough inquiry and efforts to prevent a recurrence.

During an interview on CNN’s OutFront, Heinrich was pressed on the deadly strike, with questions raised about the intentionality of the attack. Heinrich emphasized the need to await the exact details of the investigation before drawing conclusions but assured that Israel takes responsibility for its mistakes and incidents. The death toll in Gaza, estimated by Gaza health officials to be over 30,000 since the conflict began on October 7, was also discussed. Israeli officials dispute this number, citing roughly 1,200 deaths in attacks by Hamas. Heinrich urged caution regarding the figures provided by Gaza health officials and emphasized Israel’s efforts in eliminating Palestinian Islamic jihad terrorists during the conflict.

Amid international pressure on Prime Minister Netanyahu’s government over the response to the attacks on October 7, calls have been made for a temporary cease-fire to allow aid to reach those in need in Gaza. United Nations officials have warned of imminent starvation among the Gaza population, and President Joe Biden expressed outrage and heartbreak over the airstrike on the aid convoy. He called for a swift investigation with accountability and public disclosure of the findings. Concerns were raised about the high number of aid workers killed in the conflict, with international condemnation of Israel’s military response intensifying after the recent airstrike. UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Martin Griffiths described the actions behind the incident as indefensible.

The international community continues to monitor the situation closely and press for humanitarian efforts in Gaza. Calls for accountability for the deaths of aid workers and civilians have been instrumental in pushing for a resolution to the conflict. The need for transparency in investigations and the sharing of findings with the public remains a priority for ensuring justice and preventing further casualties. As the conflict evolves, efforts to provide assistance and relief to those affected by the violence in Gaza are crucial in building a path towards peace and stability in the region.
