The Cleveland Browns are preparing for the upcoming NFL Draft without a first-round pick for the third consecutive year, marking the final year since trading for quarterback Deshaun Watson in March 2022. The trade saw the Browns acquire Watson from Houston in exchange for six draft picks, including three first-round selections, but so far, Watson has had limited playing time due to injuries and suspension. In his first two years with Cleveland, Watson has only started 12 out of the 35 games played by the Browns.

Despite the lack of production from Watson, the Browns are optimistic about his recovery from a broken collarbone suffered last season. Browns Executive Vice President Andrew Berry provided an update on Watson’s progress, noting that he is throwing up to 40 yards and is in a good spot in his rehabilitation. However, whether Watson will be the starter when the season begins is still uncertain, as the medical team will ultimately determine his readiness.

Watson emphasized the importance of following the rehab plan and not rushing back to ensure a full recovery. He mentioned that there is no specific timeline for his return to full strength, but he is currently throwing at full speed with good velocity and strength. Berry expressed his optimism about Watson’s progress and hinted at the possibility of him being ready for the first game of the season, although he did not make any concrete predictions.

Following the acquisition of Watson, the Browns signed him to a five-year $230 million contract, with plans for a second long-term deal in the future. Berry highlighted the importance of securing a franchise quarterback for an extended period of time, as quarterbacks often play into their mid to late thirties. Head coach Kevin Stefanski, who navigated through a quarterback carousel last season, is looking forward to having a full season with Watson but emphasized the importance of being cautious with his rehab process.

Stefanski stressed the need to prioritize Watson’s recovery and readiness for the season before focusing on his on-field contributions. The Browns are hopeful that Watson will be able to overcome his injury setbacks and showcase his talent on the field. While there is uncertainty surrounding Watson’s status as the starter, the organization is confident in his abilities and is looking forward to his contributions once he is fully healthy.
