A recent survey conducted by Origin, a leading provider of women’s pelvic floor and whole-body physical therapy, revealed that pelvic health issues are affecting women of all ages, including millennials. The study, conducted in partnership with market research giant Ipsos, found that 8 in 10 women are facing pelvic health problems, with millennials experiencing higher rates than Gen Xers in various areas such as bladder issues, urinary incontinence, pain during intercourse, and difficulty reaching orgasm. This research highlights the need for more comprehensive studies on women’s health, particularly in the realm of pelvic health, as current research is lacking and often focuses on lifetime experiences rather than momentary issues.

The primary cause of stress urinary incontinence among millennial women was found to be childbirth, both vaginal and C-section deliveries, which can lead to muscle and fascia tearing or cutting that affects the integrity of the abdominal pelvic canister. This can result in abnormal pressure distribution and an inability to contract core and pelvic floor muscles effectively, leading to leakage during activities like exercise, coughing, laughing, or sneezing. While kegel exercises can be beneficial, manual treatment by a pelvic floor physical therapist is necessary to restore muscle tone, function, and symmetry to address the underlying causes of urinary incontinence.

Bladder urgency and frequency issues among millennial women may be caused by irritants like caffeine, alcohol, seltzer water, and chocolate, as well as poor water intake and prolonged sitting. Bladder retraining techniques such as diaphragmatic breathing during episodes of abnormal urges can help retrain the bladder to tolerate longer periods of storing urine. Additionally, difficulties in fully emptying the bladder may be linked to a history of urinary tract infections (UTIs) causing scarring, which can be temporarily alleviated by pelvic movements while sitting on the toilet. These practical strategies can help millennial women better manage their pelvic health concerns.

The study’s findings shed light on the importance of addressing pelvic health issues in women of all ages, as these issues can have a significant impact on quality of life and overall well-being. By raising awareness about common pelvic health concerns and providing effective treatment options such as pelvic floor physical therapy, women can take proactive steps to address and manage their symptoms. With a better understanding of the causes and potential solutions for pelvic health issues, women, especially millennials, can seek the support and care they need to improve their pelvic health and overall quality of life.

Moving forward, it is essential for healthcare providers and researchers to prioritize pelvic health research and treatment options for women, ensuring that comprehensive and effective strategies are available for all age groups. By addressing the unique challenges faced by millennial women, such as the impact of childbirth, genetic predispositions, and lifestyle factors, healthcare professionals can work towards providing personalized and holistic care for women’s pelvic health concerns. With continued efforts to raise awareness, conduct further research, and expand treatment options, women can receive the support they need to improve their pelvic health and well-being.
