An exclusive survey conducted by Newsweek and College Pulse found that 80 percent of U.S. college students disapprove of Israel’s handling of the war against Hamas in Gaza. The data was collected from 804 full-time undergraduate students at 328 colleges and universities, with 27 percent blaming Israel for the conflict and 20 percent blaming Hamas. The death toll estimates for Israelis and Palestinians continue to rise, with civilians making up the majority of the casualties.

The survey also revealed that 39 percent of respondents consider themselves “Pro-Palestinian,” while only 11 percent identified as “Pro-Israel.” Recent protests at higher education institutions in the U.S. have called for divestment from Israel over its actions in Gaza since October 7. Colleges like Columbia University and the University of Southern California have faced escalating protests, resulting in arrests and canceled graduation ceremonies. Additionally, incidents of racism and student expulsions have occurred at the University of Mississippi in connection to pro-Palestinian protests.

President Joe Biden has expressed support for Israel and urged Hamas to release hostages, while also advocating for a two-state solution. An aid package passed by Congress includes billions of dollars for Israel and Gaza, with a focus on replenishing Israel’s missile defense systems. However, the White House recently blocked an arms shipment to Israel as tensions escalated with plans for an offensive in Gaza.

In terms of the upcoming U.S. presidential election, the survey showed that 30 percent of young respondents plan to vote for Biden, while 20 percent support Donald Trump. Biden’s campaign is investing in youth outreach efforts and emphasizing issues that matter to young voters, such as climate change, gun laws, and student loans. Green Party candidate Jill Stein and independent Cornel West garnered support in the poll, with concerns about Biden’s response to the Israeli/Palestinian conflict potentially influencing voter decisions.

A Harvard Youth Poll released last month also showed Biden leading among young voters, with concerns about inflation, healthcare, and housing outweighing worries about the Gaza conflict. The dynamics of the upcoming election, especially regarding the views of young voters, will be crucial for both candidates as they navigate crucial issues and concerns facing the country.
