Walmart has reached a settlement in a class-action lawsuit in which it was accused of overcharging customers for certain products. The lawsuit, filed in 2022 and amended in 2023, alleged that Walmart inflated the prices of products sold by weight, including those with “rollbacks” or discounts. Customers were led to believe they were paying the discounted prices at checkout, but the suit claimed they were actually charged more. Walmart also allegedly mislabeled the weight of bagged produce, falsely advertising the weight as more than the actual weight.

Walmart has agreed to pay $45 million to customers as part of the settlement, while denying any wrongdoing. The retailer stated that it will continue to provide everyday low prices for its customers and believes that a settlement is in the best interest of both parties. Customers who purchased weighted goods or bagged citrus at Walmart stores in the US or Puerto Rico between October 19, 2018, and January 19, 2024, may be eligible for a cash payment as part of the settlement.

The cash payments will vary depending on the number of items purchased without proof of purchase. Customers can receive $10 for up to 50 weighted goods or bagged citrus, $15 for 51-75 items, $20 for 76-100 items, and $25 for 101 or more items. Customers who can provide receipts or proof of purchase for each item purchased can receive up to $500, which is 2% of the total cost of the substantiated purchases. Customers can try to retrieve receipts from Walmart’s website and must file a claim online or by mail by June 5, 2024.

The lawsuit settlement provides an opportunity for Walmart customers to potentially receive compensation for overcharged purchases. Walmart is making payments to customers while maintaining its commitment to providing low prices on products. The settlement allows customers who bought weighted goods or bagged citrus during a specific period to receive varying amounts of cash depending on the number of items purchased. Customers without proof of purchase can still be eligible for a cash payment based on the number of items they bought during the given timeframe.

Customers who were affected by the alleged overcharging at Walmart stores have a chance to claim compensation through the settlement. Walmart denying any wrongdoing has agreed to pay $45 million to customers as part of the settlement. Customers who purchased weighted goods or bagged citrus during the specified period can file a claim for cash payments ranging from $10 to $500 based on the quantities purchased and whether they can provide proof of purchase. The deadline for filing a claim is June 5, 2024, either online or by mail. Customers are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity to potentially receive compensation for any overcharged purchases.
