Virgin Voyages, a Miami-based cruise line owned by Sir Richard Branson, has introduced a new offering called the “Scarlet Summer Season Pass” aimed at remote workers. This month-long cruise is actually a package of four week-long cruises in southern Europe, catering to travelers who want to spend an extended period of time at sea. The pass covers two people and costs $9,990, offering a room, meals, fitness classes, Wi-Fi, laundry services, and access to workspaces. Booking the pass is 30% cheaper than booking four separate cruises and has been met with enthusiasm, with over 2,000 people registering interest within 24 hours and all spots selling out in just 48 hours.

The popularity of Virgin’s Season Pass cruise can be attributed to the rise of remote work due to the Covid-19 pandemic. KPMG chief economist Diane Swonk notes that there has been a significant shift in how and where people work, with remote work becoming more commonplace. Virgin Voyages’ CEO Nirmal Saverimuttu mentioned that most of the digital workers booking the cruise are in their mid-50s and work full-time remotely. The idea for the program came directly from Sir Richard Branson himself, who noticed passengers taking extended trips while working remotely on the company’s ships. Saverimuttu credits Branson’s understanding of consumer trends for the program’s success.

The Scarlets Summer Season Pass will be sailing on Virgin’s Scarlet Lady and Resilient Lady ships, each capable of accommodating around 2,700 guests. The cruises, which will run from June to September this year, will make stops at popular destinations like Cannes, Rome, and Ibiza. Travelers will have the option to switch out companions for different legs of the journey, provided they are 18 or older, aligning with Virgin Voyages’ adults-only policy. The program has received overwhelming interest, prompting the company to open additional spots for remote workers on a second cruise ship this summer.

The shift to remote work has prompted companies to adapt their offerings to cater to this new breed of traveler. Businesses that resist remote work risk losing access to top talent and limiting the diversity of their workforce.
