More than 4 million people in the region were under threat of severe weather, with forecasts warning of thunderstorms and possible tornadoes in parts of Kansas, Missouri, Iowa, and northwestern Illinois. Storm chasers and videographers shared footage of collapsed structures, a silo being hurled through the air, and tornadoes touching down in Pocahontas and Calhoun counties.
Storm chaser Reed Timmer shared a video of a rope tornado twisting through fields east of Palmer, highlighting the unique appearance of this type of tornado. Rope tornadoes may appear weaker due to their stringy appearance, but they can intensify in some cases. The video showcased the sinuous shape of the tornado in its early or final minutes of its life cycle, providing a rare glimpse into the phenomenon.
The National Weather Service, Iowa State Patrol, and Sioux County Sheriff’s Office were contacted for updates on the situation.
