Vancouver International Airport and the Canucks Autism Network have joined forces to create an event called “Learn to Fly,” which aims to make air travel more accessible for individuals on the autism spectrum. Through this event, participants are given a tour and the opportunity to practice the entire preflight process. The goal is to reduce anxiety, decrease travel barriers, and build confidence by familiarizing autistic individuals with the airport environment, making it a less stressful and more predictable experience.

The “Learn to Fly” event is an annual initiative, but this year saw the addition of a short taxi on the runway while in the airplane, a first-time experience for participants. This new element was designed to provide a more realistic simulation of the flight experience and further increase the predictability of the airport environment for individuals on the autism spectrum. The event aims to empower participants to conquer their fears of flying and feel more comfortable and confident when traveling by air.

Lindsay Petrie, with the Canucks Autism Network, emphasized the importance of allowing families to do a dry run of the entire airport experience during the “Learn to Fly” event. By offering participants the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the airport environment, the event aims to decrease anxiety and increase predictability, ultimately making the flying experience less overwhelming for individuals on the autism spectrum. This preparation helps build confidence in autistic individuals and equips them with the necessary skills to navigate the airport effectively.

Participants and their families shared their positive experiences with the “Learn to Fly” event, highlighting the impact it had on their perception of air travel. One parent, Lalaiane Parker, expressed how the event was a significant step for her son, who had been afraid to get on an airplane since 2011. By participating in the event, Parker’s son was able to confront his fear of flying and express a desire to travel and visit family members who live outside of Canada. The “Learn to Fly” event provided him with the necessary support and encouragement to overcome his anxiety and take steps towards flying independently.

Overall, the collaboration between Vancouver International Airport and the Canucks Autism Network to create the “Learn to Fly” event demonstrates a commitment to making air travel more inclusive and accessible for individuals on the autism spectrum. By providing a supportive and realistic simulation of the airport experience, the event helps reduce anxiety, increase predictability, and build confidence in autistic individuals. Through positive experiences like these, participants can conquer their fears of flying and feel empowered to explore new opportunities for travel and connection with loved ones.
