Two teenagers have been charged after a viral video showed partygoers dumping drums full of trash into the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Florida. The incident occurred during a spring break-like event in Lake Boca, near Boca Raton Inlet. The video showed teenagers on a boat throwing bins of empty bottles and garbage into the water before speeding off. The footage sparked backlash and went viral online, leading to the teenagers being charged with causing pollution, a third-degree felony that can harm human health, animal, plant, aquatic life, or property, according to a report from WFLA.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) was the lead investigative agency in the matter, identifying the boat’s operator and a second individual as the culprits seen throwing the waste into the water. The two individuals were later revealed as a 15-year-old from Gulfstream and a 16-year-old from Boynton Beach. The FWC visited the owner of the boat, where they spoke with the 15-year-old’s father, who expressed that the incident was not a representation of who they are as a family and requested legal counsel to be present during any further conversations. The FWC emphasized the importance of protecting the environment and sending a message that Florida does not tolerate such actions, as reported by a local newspaper.

The Boca Bash event where the incident took place is an annual gathering that started in 2007 in Lake Boca Raton in Palm Beach County. The event, typically held in the last week of April, has attracted thousands of partygoers over the years, with attendees engaging in various recreational activities on boats and in the water. Pictures and videos on social media showcase the festivities, which include dancing, water trampolines, and drinking alcohol. While there were 20 arrests made during the event, including 17 for boating under the influence, none of them were related to the trash dumping incident, which gained the most attention due to the viral video capturing the act.

Despite the arrests and increased scrutiny following the trash dump, FWC Chairman Rodney Barreto referred to the incident as a “huge teaching moment” for the attendees. The FWC aims to emphasize the importance of environmental protection and discourage harmful actions that can damage the ecosystem. The agency hopes to send a clear message that Florida does not tolerate such behavior and is committed to safeguarding its environment. The incident highlighted the need for responsible behavior during events like Boca Bash and the significance of maintaining cleanliness and respect for the natural surroundings.

In response to the incident, the FWC officials addressed the aftermath of the annual event and discussed ways to prevent similar occurrences in the future. While the Boca Bash continues to attract thousands of attendees and gain popularity on social media, authorities are working to ensure that such events are conducted responsibly and do not result in environmental harm. By holding individuals accountable for their actions and promoting awareness of environmental conservation, the FWC aims to create a safer and more sustainable environment for all residents and visitors to enjoy. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of upholding environmental regulations and respecting natural resources for the well-being of both humans and wildlife.
