Syrian woman Alham Albashir was sentenced to life in prison by a Turkish court after being convicted of terrorism charges for her role in a deadly explosion in Istanbul in 2022. The explosion, which occurred on Istiklal Avenue, killed six people, including two children, and injured 99 others. Albashir received seven consecutive life sentences for her involvement in the attack.

Albashir, along with a man named Bilal el-Hamaus, were identified as intelligence operatives of the YPG, a Syrian Kurdish militia group, and its political branch, the PYD. Turkey considers the YPG as the Syrian arm of the PKK, an outlawed group that has been engaged in a longstanding insurgency in Turkey. The two suspects received specialized training by the YPG and PYD and were sent to Turkey with explosives to carry out the attack.

The PKK-Turkey conflict has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths since the 1980s, with Turkey and its Western allies designating the PKK as a terrorist organization. The indictment prepared by Istanbul prosecutors last year detailed how Albashir and el-Hamaus traveled to Istanbul with the help of a network established by the YPG and PYD. El-Hamaus managed to escape the country before facing trial.

Albashir’s sentencing comes as part of Turkey’s ongoing efforts to combat terrorism and ensure the safety and security of its citizens. The attack in Istiklal Avenue in Istanbul was a tragic event that resulted in the loss of innocent lives and caused significant injuries to many others. By holding those responsible for the attack accountable and imposing strict penalties, Turkey aims to deter future terrorist activities and protect its population from such threats.

The trial and sentencing of Albashir highlight the complexities and challenges that Turkey faces in dealing with terrorism and insurgency within its borders. The country’s ongoing conflict with the PKK and its affiliates underscores the need for continued vigilance and strong counter-terrorism measures to prevent further acts of violence and preserve national security.

As Albashir begins her life sentence in prison, the case serves as a stark reminder of the devastating impact of terrorism on individuals and communities. The victims of the Istanbul explosion, including the two children who lost their lives, will always be remembered as innocent lives taken too soon. Turkey’s resolve to bring those responsible to justice reflects its commitment to upholding the rule of law and safeguarding the well-being of its citizens.
