The Ontario Provincial Police are facing criticism for their handling of the search for missing trucker Brian Lush, whose body was found in his trailer after his truck was returned to Newfoundland from Ontario. Lush was last heard from on April 24, and his truck was located at a gas station in Summerstown, Ontario. The OPP issued a news release stating that surveillance video showed Lush at the front of his rig on April 24. Despite a search that involved various resources, including the OPP’s emergency response team, canine units, drones, helicopters, and search and rescue volunteers, Lush’s body was not found.

On Monday, the OPP confirmed that Lush had been found dead and that foul play was not suspected. However, they did not reveal where his body was located. The next day, the RCMP in Newfoundland confirmed that Lush’s remains were found inside his trailer after it arrived in Port aux Basques. When questioned about whether OPP officers had searched the trailer, spokesman Bill Dickson did not respond, stating that there would be a review of the investigation. The coroner’s office in Newfoundland is investigating the death.

The search for Lush involved a plea for video images from dashcams or trail cameras recorded on or near Highway 401 near Cornwall, Ontario, on April 25. Despite reports of an individual matching Lush’s description being seen along the highway, the search did not yield any results. Lush’s personal belongings were found in his truck, but his body was not discovered until after the truck was returned to Newfoundland. The OPP has acknowledged that they did not locate Lush during their search but stated that they conducted an extensive investigation in an attempt to find him.

The lack of transparency and clarity surrounding the search for Brian Lush has raised concerns about the Ontario Provincial Police’s handling of the case. Questions have been raised about whether proper search protocols were followed and why Lush’s body was only discovered after his truck was returned to Newfoundland. The family of Brian Lush is seeking answers about the circumstances leading to his death and the actions taken by law enforcement during the search. The OPP has stated that they will conduct a review of the investigation and provide details to the family as they continue to communicate with them.

The tragic outcome of the search for Brian Lush highlights the challenges faced by law enforcement agencies in locating missing persons. The use of various resources, such as drones, helicopters, and search and rescue volunteers, did not lead to the discovery of Lush’s body during the initial search in Ontario. The subsequent discovery of his remains in Newfoundland has raised questions about the effectiveness of the initial search efforts and whether different actions could have led to a different outcome. The involvement of multiple agencies in the search for Lush underscores the need for coordination and communication between law enforcement jurisdictions in missing persons cases.
