Gen Zers are constantly debating the ethics of age gaps in relationships, even if they are legally permissible. Growing up alongside the #MeToo movement, this generation is well-versed in power dynamics and consent. The rise of celebrity pairings with significant age gaps has led to scrutiny and criticism, with many viewing such relationships as exploitative or inherently wrong. Even gender-swapped examples like actor Aaron Taylor-Johnson and filmmaker Sam Taylor-Johnson face backlash from fans and critics.

While age-disparate relationships are nothing new, the current generation feels more comfortable speaking out against them, even on social media platforms. The stigma surrounding these relationships has not disappeared, but what has changed is how criticism tends to focus on the older partner as the one who may be exploiting the younger one. Terms like “gold digger” have become less relevant, as younger partners are now seen as victims of “grooming” or exploitation.

Actual Gen Zers have varying opinions on age gaps, with some feeling uncomfortable with significant disparities while others see nothing inherently wrong with them. Some believe it’s better to date within a similar age range for shared experiences and interests, while others find age discrepancies less problematic. Many believe that overcorrection and fear post-#MeToo have led to an overemphasis on age gaps, sometimes at the expense of individual agency in relationships.

Many Gen Zers acknowledge that two consenting adults should be able to pursue a relationship regardless of age, as long as it is healthy and respectful. However, some concerns remain around predatory behavior and power dynamics in relationships with significant age disparities. The term “grooming” has been used liberally and the focus on age gaps may be seen as paternalistic feminism or a way to protect women from perceived exploitation.

While the judgment around age gaps remains strong among some Gen Zers, others believe that equity and healthy relationships can exist despite significant disparities. Ultimately, the consensus is that private relationships between consenting adults should be respected, even if they may seem unconventional or off-putting to outsiders. The experience of growing up in a digital age with easy access to unsupervised internet has shaped Gen Z’s perceptions on age gaps and relationships.
