On May 3, World Press Freedom Day is observed globally to highlight the importance of press freedom, defend the independence of media, and honor journalists who have lost their lives in the line of duty. This year, the focus is on the critical role of journalism and freedom of expression in addressing the current global environmental crisis. The United Nations emphasizes the need to ensure the visibility of environmental issues, as misinformation can hinder progress in addressing climate change and protecting vulnerable communities, particularly women and girls.

Environmental journalists face significant challenges in reporting on issues such as climate change, pollution, deforestation, and illegal mining. According to a report by UNESCO, 70% of environmental journalists worldwide have experienced attacks, threats, or pressure related to their work, with two in five experiencing physical violence. Between 2009 and 2023, at least 749 journalists and media outlets reporting on environmental issues were targeted with murder, violence, detention, online harassment, or legal attacks. The impunity rate for crimes against environmental journalists is shockingly high, with only five out of 44 killings resulting in convictions in the past 15 years.

The U.N. proposes a comprehensive strategy to protect press freedom, including preventing crimes against journalists, upholding the rights to freedom of expression and access to information, combating disinformation through journalism, and supporting diverse and viable media outlets. These recommendations are crucial not only for environmental journalists but for all journalists facing risks and threats in their line of work. In 2023, at least 50 journalists were killed globally while performing their jobs, with conflict zones seeing an increase in killings. UNESCO reported 65 journalists killed in 2023, with the Middle East being a hotspot for conflict-related deaths.

The rising number of attacks on journalists leads to what UNESCO calls “zones of silence,” where access to information is restricted, impacting both local populations and the global community. U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres stresses the importance of press freedom in maintaining democratic societies and freedom. Protecting journalists and ensuring their safety is essential for the role of the media in promoting transparency, accountability, and democracy worldwide. As World Press Freedom Day reminds us, the fight for press freedom continues, and efforts must be made to defend journalists and uphold the principles of freedom of expression.
