The 37th annual Peterborough Musicfest season will begin with a country music performance by Tenille Townes in late June. Townes, a five-time Canadian Country Music Awards Female Artist of the Year winner, will be the first act of the free summer concert series in Peterborough, Ont. Her debut album, The Lemonade Stand, won the 2021 Juno Award for Country Album of the Year. Her next album, Masquerades, released in 2022, also earned her a Juno Award for top country album. Townes’ latest work, As You Are, was released in February 2024, and she describes it as a song about being there for somebody and accepting oneself.

Townes, who hails from Grande Prairie, Alta., credits her parents for introducing her to music and her passion for songwriting. She grew up listening to singers like Patty Griffin and Lori McKenna and began writing songs at the age of 14. Townes has toured with several musical legends, including Stevie Nicks, Miranda Lambert, Shania Twain, Keith Urban, Reba McEntire, Zac Brown Band, and Dierks Bentley. She is known for her heartfelt lyrics and powerful performances on stage.

The Peterborough Musicfest season will feature free concerts every Wednesday and Saturday night, as well as on Canada Day, from June 29 to August 17. Townes will perform at Del Crary Park on June 29, marking her first time performing in the city. She has also received accolades such as 17 CCMAs and two Academy of Country Music Awards. Townes is a regular performer at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, Tenn., showcasing her talent on a global stage. Her hit songs like Somebody’s Daughter and Jersey on the Wall (I’m Just Asking) have resonated with audiences worldwide.

Townes’ latest release, As You Are, explores themes of self-acceptance and vulnerability. She encourages listeners to be brave and let down their walls to show their true selves. The song reflects Townes’ personal journey and experiences, making it relatable to many of her fans. With her soulful voice and poignant storytelling, Townes continues to captivate audiences and establish herself as a prominent figure in the country music scene.
