House Speaker Mike Johnson faces threats to his leadership but has stated that he will not step down, considering himself a “wartime speaker.” Opposition arose as House Republicans attempted to vote on aid for Israel, Ukraine, Taiwan, and a catch-all bill of national security provisions. Some members threatened to oust Johnson due to their disapproval of a measure to replenish U.S. weapons stocks to provide more weapons to Ukraine. Rep. Thomas Massie expressed support for Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s call to remove Johnson, highlighting growing dissatisfaction with his leadership.

The threat to Johnson’s position as speaker increased when Massie backed Greene’s motion to vote him out, referencing the need for a new GOP speaker similar to former Speaker John Boehner’s resignation. Despite calls for his resignation, Johnson asserted that he will not step down and is focused on fulfilling his responsibilities as speaker. Concerns about Johnson’s leadership emerged following his replacement of Kevin McCarthy and his handling of funding the government through September, amidst criticism of perceived Democratic-friendly deals and support for controversial legislation.

Johnson’s opponents also criticize his approach of supporting Democratic bills without amendments as long as they receive a supermajority of votes. Additionally, many Republicans have been dissatisfied with the administration’s inaction on immigration, which has been a precondition for further aid to Ukraine. Although Greene has not yet called for a vote on Johnson’s removal, her motion to vacate the speaker’s chair serves as a warning. It remains uncertain if she has sufficient support to replace Johnson, as unity within the party is emphasized amid various global crises.

Despite the threats to his leadership, Johnson remains steadfast in his position, emphasizing the need for party unity amid challenging circumstances. Describing himself as a “wartime speaker,” he acknowledges the complexity of the current situation and the necessity to address multiple crises effectively. Johnson highlights the importance of showcasing unity within the party and presenting solutions to the challenges faced, expressing confidence in overcoming obstacles together. As the GOP grapples with internal divisions and external pressures, Johnson’s resilience and commitment to maintaining party cohesion remain central to navigating the complexities of governance.
