Juan Alvarez-Sorto, one of three individuals convicted of carjacking and kidnapping an FBI employee in South Dakota, has been sentenced to 37 years in federal prison. Along with Deyvin Morales, Alvarez-Sorto was found guilty in January, with Alvarez-Sorto additionally convicted of unlawfully entering the U.S. after being deported to El Salvador. The third suspect, Karla Lopez-Gutierrez, pleaded guilty in August and both Morales and Lopez-Gutierrez are scheduled for sentencing on April 26.

The trio, from Greeley, Colorado, embarked on a “drug trafficking trip” to South Dakota in a Ford Expedition. Nearly running out of gas at the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, Morales suggested they “take over” a new vehicle, according to Lopez-Gutierrez’s testimony. When the FBI employee driving a Dodge Durango stopped, thinking the Expedition was a tribal officer, the suspects took the vehicle at gunpoint and brought the victim along. The victim expressed his trauma at the sentencing hearing, recounting how Alvarez-Sorto threatened his family and held a gun to his head while in the Badlands.

After making a stop in Hermosa, South Dakota, to buy gas and zip ties, the victim managed to escape. Morales and Alvarez-Sorto were arrested in Greeley one week later, while Lopez-Gutierrez was apprehended in August in Loveland, Colorado. Alvarez-Sorto’s attorney, Alecia Fuller, emphasized his client’s remorse and mentioned that Alvarez-Sorto had been subjected to abuse as a child by relatives. The sentencing is a stark reminder of the impact of violent crimes on victims and the importance of holding perpetrators accountable for their actions.

The court case highlights the severity of the crimes committed by Alvarez-Sorto and his accomplices, with the kidnapping and carjacking of an FBI employee leading to a lengthy prison sentence. The victim’s harrowing experience, from being threatened with a gun to managing to escape, serves as a reminder of the lasting trauma caused by violent crimes. The arrests of the suspects in Colorado underscore the collaborative efforts of law enforcement agencies to apprehend individuals involved in serious criminal activities and bring them to justice.

As Morales and Lopez-Gutierrez await their sentencing, the legal proceedings will continue to shed light on the events that transpired during the carjacking and kidnapping incident in South Dakota. The impact of the crimes on the victim, as described during the sentencing hearing, further underscores the need for justice and accountability in cases involving violent offenses. The outcome of the sentencing hearing for Alvarez-Sorto serves as a measure of justice for the victim and a reminder of the consequences faced by those who engage in criminal behavior involving violence and intimidation.

The role of Alvarez-Sorto’s attorney in highlighting his client’s remorse and history of abuse as a child raises questions about the root causes of criminal behavior and the importance of addressing underlying issues to prevent similar incidents in the future. While the sentencing of Alvarez-Sorto to 37 years in prison marks a significant step towards justice in this case, the upcoming sentencings of Morales and Lopez-Gutierrez will provide additional closure for the victim and his family. The lasting impact of the carjacking and kidnapping incident serves as a sobering reminder of the potential consequences of engaging in violent criminal activities and the importance of upholding the rule of law in our society.
