Juan Alvarez-Sorto, one of three individuals convicted of carjacking and kidnapping an FBI employee in South Dakota, has been sentenced to 37 years in federal prison. The trio, from Greeley, Colorado, embarked on a “drug trafficking trip” to South Dakota in a Ford Expedition. Nearly running out of gas at the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, Morales suggested they “take over” a new vehicle, according to Lopez-Gutierrez’s testimony. When the FBI employee driving a Dodge Durango stopped, thinking the Expedition was a tribal officer, the suspects took the vehicle at gunpoint and brought the victim along. The victim expressed his trauma at the sentencing hearing, recounting how Alvarez-Sorto threatened his family and held a gun to his head while in the Badlands.
After making a stop in Hermosa, South Dakota, to buy gas and zip ties, the victim managed to escape.
