Severe weather hit Michigan on Tuesday, with two tornadoes causing damage in Portage. A FedEx facility was struck, trapping around 50 workers as first responders worked to clear live electrical wires blocking their safe exit. Additionally, Pavilion Estates Mobile Home Park in Kalamazoo County was devastated by a tornado, with rescue crews searching for survivors and setting up temporary shelter at the Portage Senior Center. Residents were urged to stay put due to power outages, downed wires, and debris in roadways, with over 32,000 utility customers without power in Michigan.

The National Weather Service issued a rare tornado emergency statement for an area including Union City, southwest of Portage. While one tornado and possibly two others were likely confirmed, the service typically waits until the next day to send crews to investigate possible tornado sites for confirmation. The severe weather in Michigan is part of a larger pattern of storms that have been affecting the Plains states for weeks, resulting from waves of cool, low-pressure systems colliding with warm air from states near the Gulf Coast. This collision has created conditions ripe for tornadoes, flooding, and hail.

On Monday alone, there were 19 reported tornadoes in at least seven states, with heavy weather predicted to continue in the coming days, including thunderstorms and flash floods. Approximately 53 million people from northeast Texas to Virginia are expected to be at risk for severe storms on Thursday. The ongoing severe weather has been causing significant damage and disruption across multiple states and regions, with first responders and rescue crews working to assist those affected and restore power and services.

As the severe weather continues to impact various parts of the country, residents are urged to stay indoors and follow safety guidelines to avoid additional harm from downed power lines, fallen trees, and possible gas leaks. The National Weather Service, along with local authorities and emergency response teams, are closely monitoring the situation and providing updates and alerts to help keep people informed and prepared for any further developments. The resilience and swift action of first responders and community members in the face of these extreme weather events demonstrate the importance of preparedness and cooperation in managing natural disasters and mitigating their impact on lives and property.
