The City of Saskatoon is partnering with Elections Saskatchewan to create a voters list and support a modernized and secure civic election. May is Voter Registration Month in Saskatchewan, and residents can update their voter information on the Elections Saskatchewan website. Saskatchewan’s provincial election is set for October 28, 2024, while Saskatoon’s municipal election and Public and Separate School Divisions school board elections will take place on November 13, 2024. According to Shellie Bryant, the Returning Officer for the 2024 Civic Election, Saskatoon has not used a voters list since 1988. The partnership with Elections Saskatchewan aims to create a faster voting experience at the polls.

Bryant will collect voter registration data at the end of May from Elections Saskatchewan to create Saskatoon’s municipal voter registry. In July, eligible voters will be able to register and update their information until mid-October on the city’s Elections Saskatoon page. Residents can register to vote if they meet certain criteria by November 13, 2024, including being a Canadian citizen, at least 18 years of age, having resided in Saskatchewan for at least six consecutive months, being a resident of Saskatoon, or owning assessable land within Saskatoon for at least three consecutive months. Bryant emphasizes that being registered ahead of time will make the voting experience faster for both the provincial and municipal elections held in the fall.

As in previous civic elections, eligible voters can still register to vote at the voting location they attend in November, even if they have not registered beforehand. This flexibility allows individuals who may have missed the registration deadline to still participate in the elections. The collaboration between the City of Saskatoon and Elections Saskatchewan is aimed at streamlining the voter registration process and ensuring that all eligible residents have the opportunity to vote in the upcoming elections. By creating a voters list and updating voter information, the city hopes to increase voter turnout and make the voting experience more efficient for residents. This initiative marks a significant step towards modernizing the civic election process in Saskatoon.

The partnership between the City of Saskatoon and Elections Saskatchewan is part of efforts to ensure a smooth, secure, and inclusive electoral process for residents. By utilizing the voter registration data collected by Elections Saskatchewan, Saskatoon aims to enhance the efficiency of the voting process and provide a seamless experience for voters. The initiative also aligns with broader initiatives at the provincial level, with Saskatchewan’s provincial election scheduled for October 28, 2024. The collaboration between the two entities underscores the importance of civic engagement and the need to update and modernize electoral practices to meet the needs of a changing society.
