In a recent statement, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov praised a peace plan proposed by China as the most reasonable solution to the Ukraine conflict so far. The 12-point paper, put forward by Beijing more than a year ago, outlined general principles for ending the war without going into specifics. While the plan initially received a lukewarm reception in both Russia and Ukraine, the United States criticized China for presenting itself as a peacemaker and failing to condemn Russia’s invasion. Lavrov highlighted that the Chinese document addresses the root causes of the conflict and is structured logically from the general to the specific.

The Russian Foreign Minister emphasized the importance of China’s peace plan, despite criticism that it was vague. Lavrov described the plan as a reasonable initiative proposed by the “great Chinese civilization,” emphasizing the need for discussion around it. President Vladimir Putin also expressed interest in potentially visiting China for the first overseas trip of his new term. Russia has signaled willingness to engage in talks about Ukraine while insisting that any negotiations must reflect the “new realities” on the ground, where Russian forces control a portion of the country, claiming four Ukrainian regions as its own.

On the other hand, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has put forward his own peace formula, calling for a cessation of hostilities and a full Russian withdrawal from all occupied territory. Lavrov criticized Zelenskiy’s plan as “a menu from which you can pull out whatever you want,” indicating a lack of support from Russia. Despite Switzerland’s announcement of hosting a conference based on Zelenskiy’s plan, Russia dismissed the initiative as pointless and doomed to fail without Moscow’s participation. The differing perspectives between Russia, Ukraine, and external actors like China and the United States highlight the complexity of finding a resolution to the Ukraine conflict.

Russia’s recognition of China’s peace plan serves as a strategic move to demonstrate openness to dialogue while pushing back against Zelenskiy’s proposal. By praising the Chinese initiative, Moscow can position itself as a willing participant in peace talks while critiquing Ukraine’s approach. As diplomatic efforts continue, the need for constructive dialogue and compromise from all parties involved is crucial to finding a sustainable solution to the ongoing conflict. The upcoming meeting between Lavrov and his Chinese counterpart may provide further insight into potential avenues for resolving the Ukraine crisis through peaceful means.
