A horse named Caramelo gained national attention after being stranded on a rooftop in southern Brazil during massive floods that have caused devastation in the region, resulting in over 100 deaths. After 24 hours and a successful rescue mission led by a team in Rio Grande do Sul state, Caramelo was saved, bringing hope to the beleaguered community. Firefighters and veterinarians worked together to sedate and immobilize the horse before successfully removing him from the rooftop.

The rescue of Caramelo was broadcast live on television networks and social media influencer Felipe Neto even offered to adopt the horse after the successful operation. The news was met with joy and relief by many, including President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s wife, Janja, who shared the good news with the Brazilian leader. Caramelo is currently recovering at a veterinary hospital affiliated with a university, with veterinarians noting that he is very dehydrated but overall doing well.

Caramelo, a 7-year-old horse likely previously used as a draft animal, is one of many animals that rescue workers have been striving to save in the aftermath of the devastating floods in Rio Grande do Sul. Thousands of animals have been rescued by state agents, municipalities, and volunteers, with animal protection groups sharing images and stories of difficult rescues and heartwarming reunions on social media. The heavy rains and flooding in the region have resulted in over 100 human deaths, with thousands displaced and many more missing.

People like Guilherme Santos, seeking dog food for his puppies, find solace in the successful rescue of Caramelo and hope for the safe return of more missing animals. Carla Sassi, chairwoman of Grad, is working with state officials to discuss emergency measures for rescuing pets in the aftermath of the disaster.

The successful operation to save the stranded horse has inspired many to continue their efforts to rescue both human and animal victims of the devastating floods. The community is coming together to support one another and work towards recovery, with volunteers, organizations, and government officials all playing a role in providing aid and assistance to those affected by the disaster.
