In 2022, a deranged man named Isaiah Lee attacked Dave Chappelle on stage at the Hollywood Bowl, claiming he was triggered by the comedian’s jokes about the LGBTQ community and homelessness. Lee alleges that the venue’s security team brutally beat him, spit on him, and dislocated his elbow during the incident. He is now taking legal action against the venue, suing for negligent security and battery, and also claims that Chappelle’s entourage participated in beating him up.

Despite the attack, Dave Chappelle was not injured and continued with the show. Lee was quickly apprehended by security and removed from the stage. A video of the incident shows Chappelle being tackled to the ground by Lee as he walked around the stage. During the attack, a fake gun with a real knife inside fell out of Lee’s pocket, but it was not used on the comedian.

Isaiah Lee, who identifies as bisexual, stated in a jailhouse interview that he wanted Chappelle to know that his jokes were triggering, leading to his violent outburst. Lee claims to have sustained injuries from the incident, including back injuries, loss of mobility, and a dislocated elbow. He has filed a lawsuit against the Hollywood Bowl for negligent security and battery, alleging that the venue should have done more to prevent harm given Chappelle’s history of making offensive jokes.

Lee was initially arrested for felony assault with a deadly weapon but was ultimately sentenced to 270 days in prison after pleading no contest to assault and entering a restricted area, both misdemeanors. As part of the conditions following his release, Lee must have no contact with Chappelle and abstain from possessing dangerous weapons or consuming alcohol or controlled substances. Despite his actions, Lee claims he was inspired by Will Smith’s defense of his wife at the Oscars, indicating that comedians like Chappelle need to be more sensitive with their material.

Dave Chappelle, now 50 years old, was performing at the “Netflix Is a Joke” festival when the attack occurred. The incident has sparked discussions about the importance of safety and security at live events, as well as the potential consequences of making controversial jokes in today’s society. Lee’s lawsuit against the Hollywood Bowl raises questions about accountability for venues and performers when incidents like this occur and the impact of offensive humor on different audiences.
