The Dewdney Avenue revitalization project in Regina is set to transform the area into a more vibrant community with a focus on pedestrian access and public spaces. The project, spearheaded by the city council, aims to create a cool, warehouse neighborhood by improving connectivity to the downtown core. The groundbreaking ceremony marked the beginning of the project, which will be completed in phases over the next two years. The first phase includes updating water and sewage mains this summer, followed by the addition of boulevards and greenery in the 2025 construction season. The total cost of the project is $32 million, funded by three levels of government.

The City of Regina purchased ‘The Yards’ in 2012, with funding for the area approved in 2018. The mixed-use site contains potential for an undecided recreational facility. Regina’s Warehouse District executive director, Leasa Gibbons, believes that structural changes like new underground infrastructure, widened sidewalks, and multipurpose outdoor spaces will transform Dewdney Avenue into a safer and more exciting space. This investment in infrastructure is crucial for businesses in the area to not only survive but thrive. Gibbons sees the transformation of Dewdney Avenue into a main street as having a generational impact on the city.

While the new infrastructure will bring long-term benefits, businesses in the area are preparing for the short-term challenges posed by construction. Despite the inconveniences, businesses like Rebellion Brewing and the Wine Cellar are supportive of the project and understand the importance of such investments in the community. Rebellion Brewing co-owner Mark Heise acknowledges the necessity of the construction and has been advocating for it since opening his business in the area 10 years ago. Similarly, Wine Cellar owner Heike Edwards is looking forward to the finished product but is bracing for the construction phase, emphasizing that the short-term pain will ultimately lead to long-term gain.

The first phase of construction is scheduled to begin the week of April 28, with lane restrictions between Albert Street and Broad Street. The project aims to improve the overall look and feel of Dewdney Avenue, making it a more attractive and welcoming space for residents and visitors. The City of Regina hopes that the revitalization project will not only enhance the area’s aesthetic appeal but also improve connectivity, promote pedestrian access, and create a vibrant community hub. With funding from multiple levels of government, the project is set to bring significant change and lasting benefits to the Dewdney Avenue corridor in Regina.

Overall, the Dewdney Avenue revitalization project in Regina represents a significant investment in the city’s infrastructure and community development. By transforming the area into a more vibrant and pedestrian-friendly neighborhood, the project aims to create a cool, warehouse district that will have a generational impact on the city. Despite the short-term inconveniences posed by construction, businesses in the area are supportive of the project and recognize the long-term benefits it will bring. With funding secured and construction set to begin, the project is poised to bring substantial change to Regina’s Dewdney Avenue over the next two years.
