The recent attack by the Islamic Republic of Iran on Israel has elicited exuberant celebrations and justifications for aggression from certain anti-Israel groups in the United States. This reaction starkly contradicts their professed commitment to peace and undermines diplomacy in the Middle East. The attack involved a significant number of projectiles and missiles aimed directly at Israeli territory, continuing a pattern of violence that Iran has maintained since the 1979 uprising. Iran claims the attack was in retaliation for the killing of a top military general with ties to a previous massacre of Jews in Israel.

Various anti-Israel groups and activists in the U.S. have expressed support and praise for Iran’s attack, despite their previous calls for ceasefires and peace. Organizations like the Freedom Road Socialist Organization and the March on the DNC coalition have openly praised Iran’s violence against Israel, teaching attendees how to chant “Death to Israel” and “Death to America.” This endorsement of Iran’s military actions as legitimate defense contradicts the values of peace and reconciliation, risking further escalation of conflict in the region.

The applause for Iran’s aggression overlooks the potential risks it poses to important cultural and religious sites, such as the Al Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem, which was endangered by Iranian projectiles during the attack. The selective outrage against Israel’s custodianship of holy sites exposes a profound hypocrisy within these groups, undermining the credibility of legitimate Palestinian aspirations and perpetuating division. True advocacy for Palestinian rights and regional peace requires condemning unprovoked aggressions like Iran’s and the terrorist groups they support, such as Hamas and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad.

Supporters of peace must recognize the destructive impact of radical anti-Israel narratives that call for the destruction of the Jewish state, and instead work towards fostering an environment of dialogue and mutual respect. By celebrating Iran’s attack, certain anti-Israel groups inadvertently endorse violence and undermine the prospects for a peaceful resolution. A balanced approach that condemns violence regardless of the perpetrator is essential for achieving lasting peace and security for both Palestinians and Israelis. As advocates for justice, it is crucial to strive for a principled stance that promotes peace and condemns all forms of aggression in the pursuit of a peaceful and stable Middle East.
