The late rock legend David Bowie continues to expand his catalog even after his passing, with his estate dropping project after project to keep fans supplied with special editions and unreleased material. Bowie’s latest release, Waiting in the Sky (Before The Starman Came To Earth), has debuted on the U.K. charts at No. 39, marking Bowie’s seventieth top 40 album in the U.K. This accomplishment is certainly impressive, as very few artists have managed to place 70 different projects anywhere on the list, let alone reach the competitive top 40 tier.

Although Bowie may no longer be with us, his music is still making waves on the charts. Waiting in the Sky marks his first debut on the U.K. albums chart in 2024, following his last release in the summer of 2023 with the Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders soundtrack. This latest album release was specifically produced for Record Store Day 2024, where major music stars release special collections exclusively on physical formats in record stores worldwide to encourage music fans to visit brick-and-mortar locations.

Waiting in the Sky is described as being taken from the Trident Studios 1/4 stereo tapes from December 15, 1971, as part of the provisional track listing for The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars album. The tracklist of this latest release features four songs that did not make it to the final album, offering fans a unique look into Bowie’s creative process and musical evolution during that time period.

In addition to Bowie’s latest release, his greatest hits album, Legacy, has also been climbing the charts, moving from No. 73 to No. 68 in the same period. This continued success and interest in Bowie’s music is a testament to his enduring legacy and influence in the music industry, as new and longtime fans alike continue to appreciate and support his work even years after his passing.
