Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said on Monday that the international donors’ conference has raised 7 billion euros ($7.5 billion) in grants and loans to support earthquake victims in Turkey and Syria.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the sums raised had exceeded expectations, describing the result as “impressive”.

“I am very happy to see today that the international community is very supportive of the rebuilding efforts in Turkey and Syria,” she added.

For her part, German Foreign Minister Analina Bierbock said that Germany intends to double its aid to earthquake victims in Turkey and Syria to a total of 240 million euros.

On February 6, two major earthquakes struck the Turkish-Syrian border, killing more than 50,000 people and displacing millions.

Von der Leyen and Christerson, whose country holds the rotating EU presidency, jointly hosted the conference in Brussels.
