Over the May long weekend, Canadians planning road trips will see relatively stable gas prices compared to previous weeks. The average price of gas in Canada ranges from $1.625 to $1.639 per litre, with slight fluctuations expected. Factors such as the switch from winter to summer gas, increased refinery output, and the end of maintenance season have contributed to the current gas prices. Despite some relief, analysts predict that gas prices are unlikely to fall below $1 per litre again. Prices vary across provinces, with British Columbia having the highest average cost at $1.897 per litre, while Manitoba has the lowest at $1.415.

Dan McTeague from GasWizard and Canadians for Affordable Energy anticipates minor fluctuations in gas prices leading into the long weekend. While there has been a recent decrease of about two to three per cent, a slight increase is expected on Friday and potentially another over the weekend. GasWizard projects changes in gas prices across cities, with Toronto expecting a $0.01 increase, Vancouver a $0.02 drop, Saskatoon remaining stable, and Montreal seeing a $0.01 rise on Friday. The markets will be closely monitored following the U.S. Memorial Day weekend, and the meeting of OPEC leaders may influence gas prices in the coming weeks.

Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis for GasBuddy, advises that there should not be significant differences in gas prices between cities this weekend. He suggests that Canadians can fill up at their convenience without worrying about price variations. However, McTeague points out that prices can differ significantly between cities, such as the Kawarthas and Peterborough in Ontario having prices $0.07 less than Toronto. While major price jumps are unlikely in the near future, there are still ways for Canadians to save on fuel, such as driving efficiently, using cruise control on long trips, checking fuel price tracking websites, and practicing good driving behavior.

Despite the stable gas prices expected over the long weekend, market trends following the U.S. Memorial Day weekend and the upcoming OPEC meeting could potentially impact gas prices in the coming weeks. Suggestions for Canadians to save on fuel include driving efficiently, checking fuel prices before filling up, and practicing good driving habits. Overall, while gas prices are unlikely to see a significant decrease in the near future, Canadians can still take steps to save on fuel and make the most of their road trips during the long weekend.
