A Chicago resident and activist named P Rae Easley has been protesting against the city council’s decision to allocate an additional $70 million towards migrant care in the Windy City, warning that the city risks going bankrupt if it continues to do so. Despite Easley’s objections, the council approved the request made by Mayor Brandon Johnson in order to deal with the ongoing migrant crisis in the city. This funding is in addition to the $150 million already allocated to migrant care in the budget. However, Easley believes that there seems to be no end in sight to the allocation of taxpayer funds to support illegal immigrants, which could lead to financial ruin for the city.

Mayor Johnson’s office explained that the funding request was necessary to ensure the city is prepared for any sudden increases in new arrivals sent by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott. The city aims to provide basic necessities, including food, shelter, medical care, education, vaccines, case management, and resettlement support to the migrants. According to Johnson’s office, the city has been dealing with more than 2,000 migrants arriving each week, with nearly 40,000 migrants having arrived since August 2022. Despite the city’s efforts to support the migrants, the request for additional funding faced significant opposition from residents who believe that illegal immigrants are being prioritized over American citizens.

Easley, who hosts a radio show in Chicago and is a political abolitionist, expressed her disappointment with the city council’s decision to approve the funding for migrant care. She highlighted the need for additional resources for rehab for addicts and the restoration of transportation for general education students in the city. Easley emphasized that if the city has money to allocate, it should prioritize American children of taxpayers over illegal immigrants. She rejected the comparison between previous waves of immigrants who came to the U.S. legally and the current situation, where migrants are entering without being vetted or having a record of entry, posing potential security risks to the city.

Despite her objections, Easley clarified that her opposition is not directed solely at Mayor Johnson but rather against chaos and progressivism in general. She warned that if the mayor chooses to advocate for these policies, he will face continued opposition from her and her allies. Easley emphasized the importance of vetting individuals before they enter the country and ensuring that proper security measures are in place to protect the city. As more residents speak out against the allocation of taxpayer funds to support illegal immigrants, the support for such funding is beginning to break down, indicating a shift in public opinion on the issue. Easley’s activism and advocacy serve as a reminder of the importance of prioritizing the needs of American citizens while addressing the migrant crisis in the city.
