Mayor Eric Adams of New York City announced the inaugural National Urban Rat Summit in an effort to address the city’s ongoing rat problem. The summit, scheduled for September 18 and 19, will bring together rat experts from Boston, New Orleans, and Seattle to find solutions to the rodent issue in New York City. Adams expressed his personal disdain for rats and emphasized the importance of understanding the enemy in order to defeat it. While there has been a decrease in rat sightings in designated Rat Mitigation Zones, the city is continuing its efforts to combat the issue.

New York City Department of Parks and Recreation Commissioner Sue Donoghue stated that the city is focused on rat control and applauded Mayor Adams and Cornell University for organizing the summit. Citywide Director of Rodent Mitigation Kathleen Corradi highlighted the limited research on urban rats and their management, emphasizing the importance of collaboration among cities to improve rat control practices. New York City is at the forefront of municipal rat management and is proud to host the National Urban Rat Summit to deepen understanding and develop sustainable management strategies.

Mayor Adams’ decision to initiate the Urban Rat Summit stems from his ongoing battle with the city’s rat population. The city has been engaged in a continuous effort to combat the health threats posed by rats. The goal is to make progress in eliminating rats from the city while ensuring the well-being of its residents. Last month, New York City health officials issued a warning about the rise in bacterial illnesses transmitted through rat urine, leading to 24 reported cases in 2023. Six cases of leptospirosis, a disease caused by rat urine, have been reported in the city so far.

Leptospirosis can have serious health consequences, including kidney damage, meningitis, liver failure, and even death in extreme cases, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. People living in homeless shelters or other crowded facilities are at a higher risk of contracting the disease. The symptoms of leptospirosis can be mistaken for other illnesses, making accurate diagnosis challenging. Over the years, the Bronx and Manhattan have reported the highest number of cases, with several deaths attributed to the disease. Efforts are being made to address the rat infestation and reduce the risk to public health in New York City.

The announcement of the National Urban Rat Summit is part of Mayor Adams’ commitment to addressing the rat problem in New York City. The summit will bring together experts from various cities to share best practices and collaborate on rat management strategies. The city’s focus on rat control is evident through its efforts to reduce rat sightings and mitigate health risks associated with rats. By hosting this event, New York City aims to lead the way in urban rat management and promote collaboration among municipalities to effectively address rodent infestations. The ultimate goal is to create a safer and healthier environment for all residents.
