The City of Regina has partnered with SGI to introduce an underpass flood detection sensor system for Albert Street and Saskatchewan Drive in an effort to reduce the risk of vehicles becoming stuck in flooded underpasses during heavy rainfall. The new system includes sensors installed in the underpass that automatically trigger when flooding reaches a high-risk level, prompting “do not enter” signs to turn on and traffic signals around the underpass to turn red to indicate road closure. Additionally, the system sends a notice directly to the City to help staff more effectively respond to flooding. The $185,000 price tag for the system is funded by $60,000 from SGI and $125,000 from the city.

In previous instances of heavy rainfall in Regina, it was almost normal to see vehicles getting stuck in underpasses due to flooding. With the new initiative of introducing an underpass flood detection sensor system, the City of Regina aims to mitigate this risk. When the system is active, warning signs will turn on to inform drivers and City staff that the underpass is closed. In addition to the warning signs, the traffic signals around the underpass will turn red to reinforce road closure and the system will send a notice directly to the City to facilitate a more effective response to flooding.

The implementation of the underpass flood detection sensor system is a collaborative effort between the City of Regina and SGI, with a price tag of $185,000. The funding for the system comes from $60,000 provided by SGI and $125,000 contributed by the city. This investment highlights the commitment of both partners to improving safety and reducing the impact of flooding on traffic and infrastructure in Regina. By installing sensors in the underpass that automatically trigger in the event of high-risk flooding, the system aims to provide timely alerts to drivers and City staff, allowing for proactive measures to be taken to address flooding in underpasses.

The underpass flood detection sensor system is now live and operational at Albert Street and Saskatchewan Drive in Regina. With the installation of sensors in the underpass and warning signs at key intersections, the system will help to prevent vehicles from entering flooded underpasses during heavy rainfall. The activation of “do not enter” signs and red traffic signals around the underpass serve as clear indicators of road closure to drivers. Furthermore, the system’s ability to send notifications directly to the City enables quick and coordinated responses to flooding incidents, enhancing overall safety and efficiency in managing flood risks in Regina.

The introduction of the underpass flood detection sensor system marks a significant step towards improving safety and reducing the impact of flooding on road infrastructure in Regina. By partnering with SGI and investing in innovative technology, the City of Regina demonstrates its commitment to enhancing public safety and resilience in the face of extreme weather events. The system’s ability to automatically detect and respond to high-risk flooding in underpasses will help to minimize the disruption caused by flooded roadways, ultimately benefiting both drivers and City staff in their efforts to address flooding effectively. As the system becomes fully operational, it is expected to contribute to a more resilient and prepared community in Regina when faced with future flood events.
