Sonos has unveiled a major app redesign that promises to streamline the user experience for music streaming and system controls. The new app features a customizable home screen that combines music, content, and controls into a single interface, replacing the current five-tab layout. While the redesign may focus on aesthetics, its true value lies in improved functionality.

CEO Patrick Spence stated that the decision to reimagine the app experience came from a desire to innovate and listen to customer feedback. The redesigned app aims to make the music listening experience easier, faster, and better, setting the stage for Sonos to expand into new categories and experiences. The new app allows users to select their preferred streaming service, which will be front and center on the home screen.

The unified search bar on the home screen can search across multiple platforms and services, making it easier for users to find the content they are looking for. Chief Product Officer Maxime Bouvat-Merlin highlighted the fragmentation of the streaming experience across various platforms and services, and the new Sonos app aims to provide a streamlined streaming experience by bringing content and control to one place.

In addition to improved functionality, the redesigned Sonos app offers customization options, allowing users to rearrange and prioritize content according to their preferences. Whether users prefer recommended radio stations or quick access to their playlists, they can personalize their Sonos experience. The app also offers customization options for each device on which it runs, ensuring a tailored experience for every household member.

One drawback of the current app, the absence of remote control capabilities outside of the home Wi-Fi network, is addressed with the new web app, which replaces the desktop app. The web app allows users to control their Sonos system from any browser, providing a workaround for remote control. The redesigned Sonos app is set to launch on May 7th and will work with all existing Sonos speakers supported by the current Sonos S2 app.
