The Annual Antisemitism Worldwide Report shows a significant increase in antisemitic incidents in Western countries between 2022 and 2023, with a sharp spike following the invasion of Israel by Hamas terrorists on Oct. 7, which resulted in the deaths of around 1,200 people and the taking of 240 hostages. The authors of the report note that this event exacerbated an already troubling trend of rising antisemitism.
According to the report, the ADL recorded over 7,500 antisemitic incidents in the U.S. alone in 2023, a substantial increase from the almost 3,700 incidents reported in 2022. When using a broader definition, the number of incidents recorded climbed to nearly 8,900. Similar trends were observed in other Western countries with significant Jewish populations, such as France and Germany, where antisemitic incidents increased dramatically over the same time period. The report highlights the concerning rise in antisemitism and the need for greater awareness and efforts to combat this form of discrimination.
The release of the report coincides with a period of widespread campus protests against Israel’s prolonged conflict in Gaza, resulting in a high number of casualties among Palestinians. President Biden has spoken out against both antisemitism and Islamophobia, recognizing them as forms of hate speech that must be addressed and condemned. The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) has also reported a steep increase in complaints of “Anti-Muslim Hate,” attributing this rise to the heightened violence in Israel and Gaza after October 2023.
