Two suspects, Destry Jones and Damien Hinson, were arrested in connection to a fatal shooting that occurred at Delaware State University on April 21. The victim, Camay Mitchell De Silva, was not a student at the school and was not believed to be the intended target of the gunfire. Both suspects are not students at the university. Jones, 20, was arrested in Brooklyn, New York, while Hinson, 18, was arrested in a Dover shopping center. Jones is awaiting extradition to Delaware on charges of murder, attempted murder, conspiracy, possession of a firearm during commission of a felony, and possession of a firearm by a person prohibited. Hinson is being held in a Delaware prison with bail set at more than $3 million cash.

The incident prompted Delaware State University to cancel classes as authorities worked to apprehend the suspects. Investigators said that the Dover police department, alongside campus police, heard gunshots at 1:40 a.m. on the day of the shooting, which was around the same time that a report of shots fired during a fight near a dormitory was received. Shortly after, another call was made about a woman found on the ground outside a different dormitory who was later identified as De Silva. It was determined that De Silva was not involved in the original altercation that led to the shooting.

Authorities revealed that Jones and Hinson were part of a group involved in a fight with two other males prior to the shooting. Both suspects are facing attempted murder charges related to the two other males involved in the altercation. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are working to gather more information about the circumstances surrounding the incident. The campus police, with the assistance of the Dover police department, have been conducting night and weekend safety patrols to ensure the safety of students and faculty on campus.

As the investigation unfolds, questions remain about the motive behind the shooting and the events that led to De Silva’s death. It is unclear why Jones and Hinson were involved in the altercation and what prompted the shooting on the university campus. Students and faculty at Delaware State University are left shocked and saddened by the tragic incident, which has prompted discussions about campus safety and security measures. As the suspects await trial and further details emerge, the community is grappling with the loss of a young life and seeking justice for De Silva.
