Indonesian authorities have downgraded the alert level for Mount Ruang volcano, which erupted multiple times in the past week, causing thousands to evacuate. The volcanic activity has calmed down, leading to the lowering of the alert level to the second-highest level. The exclusion zone has also been reduced from 6km to 4km following visual and instrumental monitoring by the country’s volcanology agency.

Sam Ratulangi International Airport in Manado, located over 100km from the volcano, has reopened after being closed for several days due to volcanic ash. The airport serves flights to destinations such as Singapore, South Korea, and China. Despite the recent eruptions, no injuries or deaths have been reported. The eruptions triggered a mix of lava, ash columns, and lightning, creating a spectacle of natural phenomena in the region.

More than 6,000 residents of Tagulandang island, which houses around 20,000 people, were evacuated outside the exclusion zone as a precautionary measure. Indonesian authorities are constantly monitoring the situation as the region experiences frequent seismic and volcanic activity due to its location on the Pacific “Ring of Fire”. While the threat from Mount Ruang appears to have decreased, officials remain vigilant for any signs of renewed volcanic activity.

The decision to lower the alert level and reduce the exclusion zone indicates a decrease in volcanic activity at Mount Ruang. The volcanology agency continues to closely monitor the situation to ensure the safety of residents and travelers in the area. The recent eruptions of Mount Ruang served as a reminder of the potential hazards posed by volcanoes in Indonesia, prompting authorities to take precautionary measures to mitigate any potential risks to the local population and infrastructure.

The reopening of Sam Ratulangi International Airport allows for the resumption of flights to and from the region, facilitating travel and trade with international destinations. The airport’s closure was a necessary precaution to ensure the safety of passengers and crew members during the heightened volcanic activity. As the situation stabilizes, authorities are working to support the affected communities and assess any damage caused by the eruptions.

Moving forward, Indonesian authorities will continue to monitor Mount Ruang and other active volcanoes in the region to ensure the safety and well-being of local residents and travelers. The country’s geographical location makes it susceptible to natural disasters such as earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, highlighting the importance of preparedness and response measures. By remaining vigilant and proactive, officials hope to minimize the impact of future volcanic activity and safeguard the lives and livelihoods of those living in high-risk areas.
