Kristi Ray Ledgerwood, 44, was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in February 2022, which prompted her to make significant lifestyle changes. Having witnessed the impact of the disease on her family, she knew that she needed to prioritize her health. At 329 pounds, struggling with chronic pain and various health issues, Ledgerwood had attempted multiple diets and exercise plans in the past but had never been able to maintain them. This time, her doctor recommended a low-carb diet to help manage her blood sugar, and this recommendation became a turning point for her.

Through embracing a low-carb diet, incorporating a walking routine, and using medication, Ledgerwood has successfully lost 210 pounds and has maintained her weight loss for nearly a year. Not only has she seen significant improvements in her physical health, such as normalized A1C levels, improved kidney function, and decreased inflammation, but she has also experienced non-scale victories in her daily life. She can now walk five miles a day, play actively with her children, and no longer requires blood pressure medication.

Ledgerwood’s new diet focuses on limiting carbohydrates to 30 grams per meal, prioritizing whole grains, beans, and vegetables for carbohydrates, and incorporating plenty of protein and fiber-rich foods. She also drinks plenty of water, avoids white flour foods, and prioritizes high-fiber foods, fruits, and protein sources. By combining this dietary approach with an injectable medication prescribed by her doctor, Ledgerwood has been able to control her diabetes and manage her appetite effectively.

In addition to changing her diet, Ledgerwood has also implemented a rigorous walking routine to improve her fitness levels. Starting from a point where walking was painful and difficult, she gradually increased her activity levels by first using an indoor recumbent bike and eventually transitioning to daily five-mile walks. This newfound physical activity has not only improved her back pain but has also significantly increased her energy levels, allowing her to enjoy activities that were previously challenging for her.

Despite her remarkable weight loss and health improvements, Ledgerwood has been left with excess skin due to the drastic transformation in her body. She opted to undergo skin removal surgery to address this issue, starting with an abdominoplasty procedure to remove excess skin from her abdomen. While the recovery was challenging, Ledgerwood is satisfied with the results and plans to undergo additional procedures in the future to address loose skin on other parts of her body.

While the journey to her current health and fitness levels was challenging, Ledgerwood’s determination and commitment to her well-being have been an inspiration to others. By sharing her story and progress in the Start TODAY Facebook group, she has found a supportive community that motivates and encourages her to continue her journey towards optimal health. Ledgerwood’s experience serves as a testament to the transformative power of lifestyle changes in managing chronic health conditions and improving overall well-being.
