Polling stations in India’s Tamil Nadu state opened as the country began its national election process, with all 39 constituencies participating in the first phase. The state’s politics have been dominated by regional parties like the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), with more than 62.2 million voters choosing among 950 contestants. The DMK won the state elections in 2021, dethroning the AIADMK which had been in power for decades.

Despite the dominance of regional parties, there are signs of change in Tamil Nadu. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to make significant gains in terms of vote share, although this may not necessarily translate into parliamentary seats. Experts predict that the BJP could become the second-largest party in terms of votes and seats, challenging the traditional power structures in the state. However, there are differing views on the BJP’s potential to win seats in Tamil Nadu.

The BJP’s growth in Tamil Nadu is seen as part of a broader strategy to expand its influence in southern states where it has traditionally struggled due to its Hindutva politics. The BJP’s campaign in the south focuses more on development and national image rather than religious issues, which have been more successful in the Hindi heartland. Despite attempts to address regional concerns like Hindi imposition, the BJP has yet to win a Lok Sabha seat in Tamil Nadu, highlighting the challenges it faces in the southern states.

Pollsters have varying predictions on the BJP’s performance in Tamil Nadu, with some suggesting significant gains in vote share but minimal seats won. The absence of charismatic local leaders following the deaths of key political figures has created an opportunity for the BJP to attract voters looking for new leadership. However, established parties like the DMK remain strong favorites among Tamil Nadu voters, with many expressing doubts about the BJP’s ability to win a significant number of seats.

As the election unfolds in Tamil Nadu, the BJP’s success will depend on its ability to overcome regional loyalties and establish a strong presence in the state. While the party has made efforts to capture the Tamil vote, it faces an uphill battle against entrenched regional players with a strong hold on the state’s politics. The outcome of the election will ultimately determine whether the BJP can break through in Tamil Nadu and establish itself as a viable alternative to the traditional power structures in the region.
