This Memorial Day weekend, AAA predicts that a record-breaking 43.8 million Americans will travel at least 50 miles between Thursday and Monday. The TSA also expects up to 3 million people to pass through airport checkpoints on Friday, contributing to the congestion on both roads and in the air. Despite the surge in travel, most people are still expected to travel by car, with over 38 million motorists hitting the road. AAA advises drivers to leave metropolitan areas early on Thursday and Friday and to avoid traveling between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Sunday and Monday to avoid the worst traffic.

There has been a consistent increase in Memorial Day travel in recent years, with AAA spokesperson Aixa Diaz noting that there has been no pullback in travel since the pandemic. This year’s estimate of 43.8 million travelers surpasses last year’s total by roughly 2 million, reflecting the ongoing growth in American travel habits. The TSA predicts that they will screen more than 18 million travelers and airline crew members during the seven-day stretch that begins Thursday, marking a 6.4% increase from last year. Friday is expected to be the busiest day for air travel, with nearly 3 million people passing through checkpoints.

TSA Administrator David Pekoske believes that this summer will see even more record-breaking travel numbers, building upon the trends seen in recent years. Last year, the TSA set a record of 2.91 million travelers screened on the Sunday after Thanksgiving, indicating the potential for even higher numbers in the upcoming summer travel season. With the end of the COVID-19 pandemic allowing for more widespread travel, the U.S. has experienced a surge in Memorial Day travel, adding to the overall growth in travel numbers.

As Americans prepare for Memorial Day weekend, the emphasis is on being mindful of the potential for traffic jams and delays, both on the roads and in the air. The increasing number of travelers, combined with the ongoing popularity of car travel, means that motorists should plan ahead and take precautions to navigate the busy holiday weekend safely and efficiently. By following AAA’s recommendations to avoid peak travel times and stay informed about potential delays, travelers can make the most of their Memorial Day plans and enjoy a smooth and stress-free journey.
