While there were marked improvements in key economic measures like labor productivity, unemployment rose sharply during her first term, reaching over 3 million in 1981.
One of Thatcher’s defining moments as Prime Minister was her handling of the Falklands War in 1982, which dramatically shifted the national mood and contributed to her reelection in 1983. Thatcher also played a key role in creating a new era of détente with the Soviets through her dealings with Mikhail Gorbachev.
